Job Summary

Project Residential Assistant(s) are responsible for assisting in fostering an environment that is conducive to student academic, social, cultural, and personal development.

As a member of the TELACU Education Foundation - Upward Bound, Summer Instructional Component team, Project Residential Assistant(s) will emphasize community among our high school participants and serve as positive role models. Project Residential Assistant(s) will support with the oversight and enforcement of the Program's policies and procedures, and discipline standards established by the Project Director. Furthermore, they will contribute to providing overnight or day supervision and facilitating student services and activities during residential hours.

Tentative Schedule

Summer work schedules: Sunday through Thursday for 5 weeks; beginning on Sunday, June 22 and employment ending on Thursday, July 24. Day shift 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM or Night shift 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM. At time of interview, trainings and work schedules will be provided.

Project Residential Assistant(s) will be required to participate in additional summer staff training such as First Aid certification (if needed) & orientation; tentatively scheduled for June 16 & 17.

Essential Job Duties

  • Assist Upward Bound Program Staff by providing resident services support during residential hours
  • Prepare and facilitate icebreaker and team activities to foster community among students
  • Affirm and support students' goals of continuing into higher education
  • Assist with administrative tasks and preparation of materials as needed; ensure that assigned material/supplies are prepared for activities
  • Provide day or overnight supervision during residential weeks
  • Serve as a constructive and positive role model for personal behavior and academic pursuits, and adheres to all Program policies
  • Assist with the oversight and enforcement of the Program's policies and procedures, and discipline standards established by the Project Director, including enforcement of study-hall and quite hours, and night-time schedule
  • Participate in all Program academic and social activities during assigned working hours.
  • Maintain effective communication, a cooperative team environment, and a positive attitude towards students, residential-facility staff and Program staff
  • Remain aware of students' special circumstances (i.e. health or mental health concerns, academic difficulties, etc.)
  • Observe and report student behavior that is inappropriate and/or in violation of the Program's policies and procedures, such as behavior endangering the health and safety of students, and behavior resulting in damage to the facility
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of differences and assist students in developing an understanding of diverse cultures and lifestyles; respect and treat all individuals fairly and equitably with respect to ability, gender, sexual orientation, culture and ethnicity
  • Receive student feedback about the program and channel feedback to the appropriate program personnel; serve as a liaison between the residents and the Upward Bound program
    Other Duties:
    • Attends summer team meetings
    • Adheres to all company policy and procedures
      Experience & Education:
      • Applicants must be a college student at least at junior level and in good academic standing
      • Must have the interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with Program staff and students
      • Experience with high school aged students preferred
      • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of first-generation and/or low-income students; understanding of cross-cultural values regarding education; and the ability to establish rapport with the target population
      • Must receive favorable background check results; Live Scan fingerprinting; Tuberculosis screening and drug screening
      • Valid First Aid, CPR and Mandated reporter certification required (Training provided)
        Computer & Software Skills
        • Proficient in Microsoft office Suite
        • Proficient in virtual and online programs such as Zoom, Google Drive, and Google Classroom
          Travel:
          • Occasional local travel
          • Must have a valid California Driver's License, proof of current vehicle insurance and a driving record that meets TELACU Education Foundation insurer's criteria; must be able to use own vehicle in the course of work
            Reasoning & Mental Abilities:

            Makes sound decisions, sets goals based on available information, and evaluates situations and requirements to plan and adjust work accordingly.

            Work Environment & Exposures:

            Position may require occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles, vibration and loud noise levels.

            Will be exposed to varying weather conditions, soil, pollen, grass and plant materials.

            EQUIPMENT USE: Computer, keyboard, mouse, cell phone, copy machine, fax machine.

            COVID-19 Vaccination:

            Must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated by the first day of work. A copy of the CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card must be submitted to Human Resources.
